Afghanistan. Post 9/11. The Taliban have left and the bruised and battered Afghans struggle to put there lives together amidst tragedy. No Afghan family is untouched by war and many struggle with homelessness, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and death of a family member. Yet, the people of Afghanistan are survivors and fighters who are full of hope.

Fawad is the precocious pre-teen narrator who was born under the shadow of the Taliban. Fawad lost his father, two brothers and his sister was abducted during the reign of the Taliban. He lives with his mother as they struggle to survive. Fawad begs on Chicken Street and his mother cooks for foreigners. Life takes a dramatic turn when they move in and then become friends with the foreigners that Fawad's mom works for. Fawad's impressions about foreigners as a group of godless, naked, drunk and clearly crazy people made me laugh out loud multiple times.

Born Under a Million Shadows is a witty, funny, moving look at current day Afghanistan and its people as seen through the eyes of a child. What makes this story special in that the author lived there for over two years and fell in love with the people and landscape. Busfield puts a lot of her own experiences and much of her heart into this soulful novel of hope and love. She highlights the issues of street children, and the fact that education is important if the country is going to be able to decrease the infant mortality rate and get out of the cycle of poverty. Juxtaposing the foreigners with a small family of Muslims who need the foreigners to survive was genius and captivated me from page one.

"Afghanistan is famous for two things: fighting and growing poppies." (pg 60)
Hopefully Afghani people will soon learn to fight with words and an education instead of guns.

Born Under a Million Shadows will raise your level of consciousness.

Such a different perspective of the situation in Afghanistan. Very enlightening. Excellent read.
it's still an interesting read. If you go in comparing it to Kite Runner it will definitely fall short. I enjoyed reading it a lot and it was a lot less "heavy" and depressing than KR... It just felt like everything was wrapped up too perfectly (not very realistic). I did like the twist at the end )
I thoroughly enjoyed this read- very easy to get into from the first paragraph. By the end of the sample it hard to put down as it drew me into Afghanistan life. The writing style is amusing and yet deals with some acute sadness. Overall it leaves you feeling hopeful and interested in a life so different from our own and longing to find out more.
The best part about this book was the narrator. Fawad - a young Afghan boy tells the story in a funny, heartfelt manner. He allows us to see the complex issues of Afghanistan through a simple lens.
I loved this book from beginning to end. Actually hesitant to read it, as I hate diving into a sad, violent pit of reality, which is a truth about Afghanistan in many ways. This author brought to me a whole new way of seeing the reality, with tenderness and candor. Through the eyes of a real boy, who loves his world, the people in it, in spite of the hardships and tragedies---I was able to see the sunshine amidst the shadows. It helps so to be able to laugh---often, throughout the story. Page turner, hard to put down. It's a must-read.
This is a great debut novel from this author. I actually just finished Kahled Hosseni's latest novel - and the mountains echoed - which was also very good, and was in "Afghan" mode.

And under a millions shadows was the perfect accompaniment. This book is a lively, lovely engaging story told through a young boy Fawad and his interactions living in Kabul post 2001 and the fall of the Taliban. He and his mother live in a house working for foreigners and each character, both foreign and Afghan become part of the novel. The author has a light, modern writing style.

This book will engage you from the first page to the last - and will definitely keep you reading through the night -a perfect summer read!
I loved this book. For me it had everything...humor, excitement, sadness, and more. Whenever I had free time I would read a few pages and at bedtime I would stay up far to long reading this wonderful book. The main character Fawad is an 11 year old boy who reminded me of my beloved grandson Sam who has the same sense of humor and sensitivity which was a delightful bonus. The author makes you care about ALL the characters because of her beautiful writing. I enjoyed learning about the culture of Afghanistan and the strength of its people. It grabs you from the first page and doesn't let go until the last page but the story and characters stay with you long after you are done. It's very hard to believe that this is the authors debut novel and I can't wait for her next beautifully written novel. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to experience an excellent read.
